Texas Holdem Poker : Semi-Bluffing and Defensive Wagering

January 21st, 2011 at 6:21

Seems like most folks are usually talking about pre-flop technique, so I would like to talk a little bit about how I wager on after the flop. Maybe I can help others, or possibly they’ve got advice to enhance my play.

I imagine that two of the most significant plays after the flop are the semi-bluff and the defensive wager. Which is because these are the plays you generate if you havent hit a hand except you’ve got a excellent drawing hand. Its easy to wager on a hand when you flop a monster. Except I consider that these 2 are the ideal ways to bet on a drawing. Each one is played depending on you opponent(s) and your postion. So here’s how I play it, so tell me what you think.

Early Placement – Tight Competitors:

A semi-bluff works fairly effectively in this position. Appear out betting and if a tight gambler didn’t hit a hand he’ll probably lay down, and if he’s unsure you may have a call. But watch out, if that tight player comes back over the top it may be time to have away.

Early Place – Loose Competitors

This really is had been I like to do a defensive wager. Make a decision how quite a few chips you are willing to risk on your draw and wager. It is usually a much smaller wager than regular. It has been my encounter that the loose gambler will usually just call a wager instead of re-raise. Nevertheless, in the event you check to them, theyre more likely to throw in more chips than your willing to pay.

Late Position – Tight Opponents

This can be the ideal time to try and do a semi-bluff, particularly if most of the table checks. If that’s the case you’ll probaly pick up the pot now. If a player prior to has bet, you could have to choose if he has a hand or not. If not, then reraise and he will possibly go away since he was attempting to steal the pot. Should you feel he does, effectively then it’s time to determine your odds, and make a decision if the pot odds are worth the call.

Late Position – Loose Competitors

This one is a bit difficult, simply because it is tougher to put a loose gambler on a hand. And if your in late place against loose gambler, odds are they have already bet. That is had been I usually come to a decision to take a chance and arrive back over the best of them and hope they don’t call, and if they do, well then its time to wager. Odds are though even a loose player will go away should you are available back strong enough.

Keep in mind though that these are moves I only generate right after the flop comes and I have a respectable drawing hand (usually not a gutshot either). Perhaps 4 to the flush or the open ended straight, for instance.
