Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly wager against each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
