Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently compete against one another. Howard had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
